Summer Like it’s 2014! Best Retro Activities for Every Personality (2024)

Ready to relive the epic summer of 2014? With its catchy pop hits, great young adult fiction and iconic teal-and-coral color scheme, 2014 was definitely a time to be alive.

Those of us who were kids back then remember long summer days spent making iMovies with friends, buying giant Slushies from the gas station...no wonder TikTok has collectively decided to turn the clock back this summer!

To capture that magic, here's what you should cross off your 2014-style summer bucket list, based on your personality type.

ESTJ: Host a Fourth of July BBQ

ESTJs love planning and like to be around friends. Impromptu hangouts can stress you out, though (chances are, you are not down to go to the beach with five minutes’ notice), so have fun planning this BBQ to a T.

Invite your friends and family over on the Fourth of July to grill food, swim and play games. Make spreadsheets to keep track of who is bringing what, and start planning the music and entertainment weeks in advance. You’ll enjoy picking out patriotic decorations, but you’ll also love laughing with your loved ones over food.

ISTJ: Go to the zoo

A trip to the zoo has all the elements you love, ISTJ—the natural world, new facts to learn and a fun, hands-on experience. Maybe even turn it into a scavenger hunt by competing to see who finds all the animals on the list first.

Some zoos allow you to get interactive with the animals, so definitely feed the giraffes and pet the baby animals for a throw-back to those childhood trips. Don’t forget to take lots of pictures to add to your meticulous photo albums!

ESFJ: BEACH!!!

ESFJs, your task is BEACH!!! — typed like this because that's how we wrote it on our 2014 summer bucket list in all-caps and glitter pens. Because the beach is the quintessential summer activity for ESFJs!

You are fun-loving and breezy, so gather your friends for a beach day (or multiple) over the summer. Make it even more nostalgic by agreeing to wear color coordinating bathing suits and making friendship bracelets on the sand.

ISFJ: Go night-swimming

The experience of night swimming is hard to explain to someone who has never done it. Gliding through the water under cover of the night is one of those experiences that makes you remember you are alive.

As an ISFJ, you can easily fluctuate between your natural introversion and your more extraverted side. You are versatile, and so is this activity. Night swimming can either be a fun group activity or a meditative experience.

Visit a local pool that’s open at night or swim laps in your own backyard. Make sure that the area around the pool is well-lit, and that you let someone know beforehand that you’re swimming (safety first, ISFJ!).

ENTP: Get a guy or girl's #

In this digital age, it doesn’t have to be their number (an Instagram @ is much safer). But in the 2010’s, this was how middle schoolers communicated that we wanted to get romantic over the summer. “Get a guy’s #” was the most scandalous thing on the bucket list.

ENTPs are naturally charming and radiate self-confidence. Taking the first step toward someone you are drawn to should be easy for you. If it’s someone you work with, make plans to see each other after hours. If it’s your local barista, strike up a conversation. If you already have a partner, act on a friend crush! Just don't come on too strong. Making friends when you're 10 years old is less awkward than when you're a grown up.

INTP: Stargaze and catch fireflies

As an INTP, you can be fascinated with the natural world. Both of these activities are a chill way to become better acquainted with it.

Go online to search for firefly sites near you (bonus points if the drive there is calm and nostalgic). Bring a jar to catch and release fireflies. If you’re going with a friend, see who can catch the most. When you’re done, put down a blanket and look up at the stars. Stay there, in that moment, for as long as you need to, to feel connected to something bigger.

ENTJ: Road trip

Road trips are another quintessential summer activity. With some friends or a significant other, spend at least one day on the road, making pit stops for gas, good food and Insta-worthy photo ops. Maybe you want to see a bunch of different sites on the road, or travel towards one place—this activity is versatile.

Your ENTJ energy and practical thinking makes you the ultimate road trip organizer. Your travel companions need you, since you'll pay attention to the gas levels and make sure that everybody is eating more than McDonald’s for each meal.

INTJ: Do an escape room

Analytical and problem-solving, you were likely the kid who finished the summer reading challenge every year, two weeks in. Now as an adult—though you love bonfires on the beach just as much as anybody else—you like some sort of mental stimulation over the summer.

Gather a bunch of your friends and try an escape room. While escape rooms can be extremely frustrating (as an INFP, I quit within 15 minutes of my first one), you, INTJ, will love the opportunity to exercise your problem-solving skills. When the final clue is revealed, you will feel a sense of gratification.

ESTP: Go to a concert

ESTPs are energized by the vibes around them—that's why you gravitate towards sports, racing and daredevil activities. And it's why a concert is right up your alley.

Chances are, some of your favorite artists are coming through your hometown this summer, so splurge on good seats. Pregame by listening to their songs on the car ride there, and dress up according to the vibe. If the outfits, music and ambiance are all right, you have the perfect summer night on your hands.

ISTP: Camp out in your backyard

Flexible and resourceful ISTPs are naturally good campers. Put your handiness to use by camping out in your backyard for a night. Even if you are capable of camping for real, a backyard camping trip is nostalgic and cute. Plus, it's nice to know you won’t be wrestling a bear for your breakfast.

Set up a tent outside and get some siblings or friends to stay in sleeping bags overnight with you. Roast marshmallows and hot dogs, and tell ghost stories by a fire. Make a rule that you can’t go into the house—but if anyone really has to pee, we won’t tell if you sneak in for a quick bathroom break!

ESFP: Ride every scary ride at the amusem*nt park

Brave and thrill-seeking, ESFP is the kid who was bored every day of summer break. Lying around and watching TV just didn’t cut it for you. You still have that itch as an adult—to satisfy it, go to the amusem*nt park.

Make a list of every ride that is “too fast” or “too high” and make a point to go on all of them. If you feel like documenting your journey, record your thoughts before and after each ride (I wouldn’t risk recording on a drop tower). If you aren’t sick afterward, reward yourself with park food.

ISFP: Change your look

On the OG bucket lists, this particular sentiment was usually written as “get a glow up before school.” But now that we are older, we can acknowledge that trying to “look better” in preparation for seeing our peers again is a waste of a summer. Instead, why not experiment with your look?

ISFPs love defining and redefining their personalities, so dye your hair out of a box. You know you’ve always wanted to. Or cut it shorter than usual. If that's too much, experiment with your interests. Start listening to a new artist and make it your entire personality (I did it with Radiohead last year). Pick up a hobby or sport that nobody would expect you to enjoy. Whatever you do, focus on enhancing your personality—not changing it.

INFJ: Go to a drive-in movie theater

You love your friends and family, INFJ, but social settings can be stressful because you often feel like you're mediating other people's drama, or you're not being entertaining enough.

A good way to see people and have fun without placing too much pressure on yourself is to go to a drive-in movie theater. Find one near you—they’re often free—and go watch a movie while the sun sets. Drink orange soda out of Twizzler straws, The Summer I Turned Pretty style. Bonus points if the movie is Grease.

ENFJ: PJ movie day with friends

Charismatic and organized, you contribute to your friend group by giving structure to their plans. Use your ENFJ superpowers to subtly take the reins on this hangout idea by asking everyone over to your house for a PJ movie day and setting the theme. To really go back to 2014, binge the Disney Channel Original Movies.

This idea is also pretty versatile because you can choose to buy snacks on a drugstore run or bake them as part of the movie day. And of course, spending the day with loved ones is very therapeutic.

ENFP: Make a summer video diary for YouTube (or not)

You, ENFP, are itching to create something this summer. You watch content that leaves you not just entertained, but inspired to add to your own life. Chances are, you are the one forwarding summery TikToks to your friends with the message, “We should do this, too!”

With a camera or a phone, vlog an eventful day in your life. Have your friends and family participate in it. Play influencer. Pretend that there are thousands of people eager to see what kind of salad you ate today, or hear your thoughts in the car.

You can post the edited video, but also feel free to share it with close friends only. Just having the memories is enough.

INFP: Ride bikes all day

If there is one thing INFPs love, it is days that feel like movies. Riding your bike through miles of suburbia feels like a movie.

Alone, or with a friend, spend an afternoon biking until sunset. Make stops along the way: gas stations to pick up Slurpees for sustenance, meadows to rest and talk. Participating in these long stretches of physical activity is a good way to be around someone without having to actually say anything.

End the night by cooking a hearty meal. Do you remember how we used to come inside after long days outside to find casseroles on the table? Recreate that feeling.
